Travel Within Malaysia

Once you've arrived...

There are many ways for you to travel around Malaysia. From the moment you touch down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), you have a choice of:

1.)Taking a cab / limousine taxi:
This is most recommended if it's your first time to Malaysia.If you have booked a hotel, just give the name and address of the Hotel to the driver.

2.)Going on the E.R.L. (modern railway system from KLIA to KLSentral)
This is a good choice to make if:
a.) This is NOT your first time to Malaysia.
b.) You are familiar with the KLSentral train station.
c.) From KLSentral, you can take a taxi to your hotel or ride the various trains (Putra LRT, Star LRT, Monorail, KTM Komuter) to your destination.

3.)Renting a car and self-drive
a.) Rent a car only if you're extremely familiar with Malaysian roads, especially the roads around Selangor and Kuala Kumpur.
b.) Note that Malaysian road routes tend to change because of construction.
c.) If you're not familiar with driving on the right-side of the road, please take a taxi or the ERL instead.
d.) If you're not familiar with Malaysian road signs and traffic regulations, please take a taxi or the ERL instead.

Travelling By Air:

If you plan to go to other states in Malaysia, you can travel by air.
If you plan to travel to Borneo, Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah), this is the only way to get there from Peninsular Malaysia.

Description: Malaysia's international airline, with economy, business and first class. Seating position depends on the class you paid for and food and drinks are served during flights.
Please make sure you bring your passport even if you're travelling within Malaysia.

Description: Low-cost airline for local travel.

No tickets, but a reference number is given that you must produce during check-ins.

Travelling By Rail:

Travelling by the major railway-line in Malaysia is recommended if you already have your destination in mind.
The railway-line only covers these states:
1.)Johor
2.)Melaka
3.)Negeri Sembilan
4.)Selangor
5.)Kuala Lumpur
6.)Perak
7.)Kedah
8.)Perlis
9.)Pulau Pinang (Butterworth)
10.)Certain parts of Pahang (non-coastal areas)
11.)Certain parts of Kelantan (non-coastal areas but stops at Kota Bharu)

If you're planning to travel to the coastal areas of Pahang, Terenganu and Kelantan, you should take the bus or a flight or drive yourself.

There is no official rail service in Sarawak.
If you're planning to travel around Sarawak (Borneo), plase take a flight (highly recommended), hop on a bus or drive yourself (only if you are familiar with the area or have a friend to guide you).

There are some rail services in parts of Sabah (Borneo) but the route is limited to areas near Kota kinabalu and the north-west coast of Sabah.

Travelling by Taxi / Cab:

Travelling by taxi is one of the easiest ways to get around, especially if you want to avoid over-crowded buses or trains. You can also relax whilst someone else does the driving and navigating for you.
NOTE: Please ride taxis that are registered at the airport, railway stations, bus stations or hotels. Do not get into cars that do not have the Taxi or Teksi signs on them. Ask to see a valid taxi license if you're unsure.

Bus Stations in Kuala Lumpur:

1.)Hentian Putra
Do check where your bus would depart from. You may buy the tickets here but the buses may depart from a different station.
Buy your tickets here if you plan to take the express coach to the East Coast (Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan) because this is where the buses to those areas will depart.
Coach tickets can be bought 2-3 hours before travel but it's better if you book first.
Tickets tend to be sold-out during school holidays, national holidays and university term breaks.

2.)Hentian Pudu
If you're heading towards Perak, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, or Perlis you should get your bus tickets here because this is where you'll get on the coach to those areas.
You can also buy tickets to Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan at Hentian Pudu.
You may buy tickets to the East Coast here but I'd recommend you go to Hentian Putra because that is where you'll get on the coach to those areas.

Do check where your bus would depart from. You may buy the tickets here but the buses may depart from a different station.
