Malay word for Highland / Highlands: tanah tinggi
'tanah' means land or soil.
'tinggi' means high.
How to say tanah:
Pronounce the a in 'ta' as in 'mama' or 'papa'.
Pronounce the a in 'nah' as in 'mama' or 'papa',
however the h is not a silent letter, so 'nah' rhymes with 'hah'
The entire word sounds like 'ta-nah'.
How to say tinggi:
'ting' rhymes with 'ring' or 'king'.
'gi' rhymes with 'bee' or 'fee'.
The entire word sounds like 'ting-gee'.
Malay word for Hill / Hills: bukit
How to say bukit:
'bu' sounds like 'goo' or 'moo'
The i in 'kit' is pronounced like the i in 'hit' or 'lit'.
The entire word sounds like 'boo-kit'.
The two most famous highlands in Malaysia are the Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands.
Cameron Highlands is a lush green area filled with tea plantations, vegetables and strawberry farms,
and of course hill resorts.
Genting Highlands has a world-class entertainment centre, notably a casino and a theme park,
as well as a number of hotels.
These places are popular with the local folks and businessmen as a place of comfort and relaxation,
as well as being relatively near to Kuala Lumpur compared to other tourist destinations.
The hills and highlands featured here have a number of resorts and tend to be quite touristy.
